Fresh Chilled Semen

Fresh Chilled Semen Collection, Evaluation and Shipping is done when the collection is being shipped via FedEx for insemination elsewhere (or [rarely] to hold for an AI here).

Once extender is added to the semen, it will typically stay viable for up to 72 hours.  The cost is more then a regular collection & evaluation because of the need for extender and the shipping container.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Do I need to bring any paperwork?  A copy of the stud’s AKC registration.

Do you have semen I can buy to get my bitch pregnant? As the semen remains the property of the stud dog’s owner, we do not sell semen. It is the bitch owner’s responsibility to find the stud dog.  We may be able to refer them to responsible potential stud dogs owners, but typically that is not done.

Does my stud need to have any tests performed? No.

At what age is best to collect semen from my stud dog? Young dogs typically have better quality sperm.   Successful collections can be done on older dogs, but between the ages of 2 – 5 are ideal.

Does it matter if this is my studs first time? If the stud has never been used (bred) or collected, we recommend doing a “clean-out” collection approximately one week prior to collection.  This serves to both remove old, dead sperm from the pipes plus allows us to do a preliminary evaluation and make sure there are no major concerns.

Does it make a difference if it has been awhile since my stud’s previous collection? If he has not been used or collected within the last six months, a clean-out collection should be performed approximately one week prior to the freezing visit.

How long does the collection appointment take? Depending on the dog, typically the appointment time is between 15 and 30 minutes.  Make An Appointment.

How far in advance should I make my appointment? We can usually get you when requested based on when the sample is needed for insemination.

Can I be present during the procedure? Yes, we encourage you to stay. We find the patient is more comfortable with their owner present.

How do I know my dog will cooperate with the collection? Usually not a problem!  We highly recommend the use of a “teaser bitch” who is in full estrus.  If the stud dog owner does not have access to a bitch in heat, we can usually borrow one from a breeder client.  The quality of the collection will always be higher with a teaser bitch regardless of the males’ libido.

Is there anything I can do to improve the quality of my stud dog’s semen?  Sperm count and motility can be affected by disease, excessive heat, trauma, medications, stress, nutrition, age, libido and other factors.  If your dog has been used and not produced puppies, we recommend a complete reproductive examination, which may include semen analysis, bloodwork, ultrasound or other diagnostic measures.

How long is chilled semen viable?  Typically, with the extender up to 72 hours. It is carefully packed and shipped with ice packs to ensure it’s safe arrival.
